Press of Atlantic City - 7/4/2017

Counselors from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs are now able to see patients at an office in Cape May County thanks to a partnership between the Ventnor Vet Center and Cape Counseling, according to a news release published last week.

Veterans can make appointments to see counselors from the VA vet center at Cape Counseling's offices at 128 Crest Haven Rd. in Middle Township, the release said.

The program, which started in February, was facilitated by the Citizens Veterans Advisory Committee, a nonprofit group aimed at promoting the interests of county veterans, said Carol Cohen, executive director of the American Red Cross of Southern Shore.

Services provided by the counselors include therapy for veterans making the transition to civilian life, counseling for those suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and depression and referrals for substance abuse, according to the release.

Counseling is also available to spouses and family members of veterans, Cohen's statement said.

More than 8,000 veterans live in Cape May County, according to the release. Several local advocates have recently spoken out about wanting to reduce the distance county veterans have to travel to get VA health care.
