Group works to honor Veterans in Comanche Cemetery

Duncan Banner - 11/30/2018

Nov. 27--In Comanche, a group of people are making sure every veteran in Fairlawn Cemetery is honored and decorated for the holiday season. The group is making wreaths for service members' graves.

Co-organizers Susan Mitchell and Janet Siebert said they were working with the American Legion Post 258 in Comanche and its commander, John Williams, on the project.

"Both of our husbands are military and we just felt the desire to do it," Mitchell said."It's going to be beautiful to see all those wreaths as you drive past the cemetery and to just know that we've honored them."

This is the first year for this to be done and while artificial, they are well made and can be put up and used for several years.

A small ceremony for the decoration is 11 a.m. on Dec. 15 at the cemetery.

"We'd love for people to come out and be apart of our event," she said. "We'd like for them to share the enthusiasm that we have. The Comanche High School Band will be there, Marcus McEntire will say a few words too."

Mitchell said they counted around 500 graves which will get a wreath.

"I'm sure there are some we missed," she said. "We walked the cemetery looking for military markers and we came up with almost 500 just from that. Then from Facebook and social media publicity, we've picked up more and I am sure there is some we have not identified yet."

But all will be honored she said.

"We have extras that day and we hope we will have enough," Mitchell said. "If not, we will get those made during the Christmas season to make sure every veteran is honored."

Right now, the group is caught up on the actual production of the wreaths but could use some donations.

"It takes about $10 to make each wreath," Mitchell said. "We are caught up on the making part, we are in need of donations. We would like to make this ongoing from now on, so any funds that go over what we need this year will be used next year."

To make a donation contact Williams at 580-467-3107.

Mail donations to P.O Box 102 Comanche OK. The check needs to be made out to American Legion Post 258 and memo the "wreath project."
