South County hosts Hunt for Veterans; Outdoors

Capital - 12/9/2018

Around Thanksgiving, local hunters and farmers teamed up with No Person Left Behind/Operation Outdoors to hold the annual "Marvin Dorsey SoCo Deer Hunt for Veterans."

Eleven military veterans from the Army, Jason Griggs, Dwayne Applebee, Sylester Goode and Matt Davis; Marines, John Brewer, Eric Burkett, Jordan Martian, David Ingram, Bill Kerner and Mike Kazimir, and, from the Air Force, Richard Canfield, were paired up with knowledgeable hunters and landowners from southern Anne Arundel County.

The group took to the fields and woods before sunrise to get situated, and for the rest of the morning enjoyed a good hunt. The veterans took five does and, "nearly" two bucks. (One of the organizers told me "nearly" because one of the antlered deer - a seven-pointer - was actually a doe.)

Around lunchtime the group returned to the family farm of Joel Greenwell, who hosted the event, where they were joined by 80 supporters, including (now) County Executive Steuart Pittman. Everyone enjoyed a good, home-cooked meal and fellowship, both provided locally.

Once again, Mark Hoke of NPLB/Operation Outdoors, which coordinates hunting and fishing programs for wounded vets, was instrumental in helping organize the hunt.

Ronnie Hall from Mill Swamp Road graciously donated a mount for one of the antlered deer, and the meat processing was done free of charge by Greg Jackson of Harwood.

BIODIVERSITY PROJECT HONORED: Nature lovers, anglers and hunters should applaud Maryland's Wildlife Advisory Commission's choice for its "Conservationist of the Year," the Maryland Biodiversity Project and its founders, Bill Hubick and Jim Brighton.

This nonprofit organization has produced an online database, with an assist from more than 800 naturalists and photographers, that's documented 18,000 species and more than 10,000 photographs.

"While the accomplishments of these two dedicated conservationists sound terrific, there is nothing like experiencing the Maryland Biodiversity Project firsthand to demonstrate the wealth of information and the dedication of the community they have built," Wildlife and Heritage Service Director Paul Peditto said. "Our experts visit their site often, as they constantly add new and unique content."
