Korean War veterans group raises around $33,000 for memorial wall in Washington

Intelligencer Journal - 2/16/2019

A local veterans group will soon make a contribution of around $33,000 toward the addition of a wall of names to the national Korean War Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Part of the donation being made by the local Gen. John H. Michaelis chapter of the Korean War Veterans Association comes from a fundraising concert held last month at Lancaster’s Ware Center.

The concert, which featured both Korean and American singers, dancers and percussionists, raised more than $30,000 through ticket sales and sponsorships, Paul Cunningham, president of the local veterans group, says.

Cunningham is also president of the national Korean War Veterans Association.

The rest of the donation came from a $2,200 contribution the group received Wednesday from the Central Pennsylvania Korean Association.

“They have been so supportive,” Cunningham says of the regional Korean association that is headquartered in Camp Hill. “They helped us get the Korean musicians” who performed at the Jan. 13 concert.

Cunningham and fellow Korean War veteran Dr. James Argires, of Lancaster, will soon present the donation to the Korean War Veterans Memorial Foundation in Washington.

The foundation is raising money through veterans groups for a Wall of Remembrance, bearing the names of the estimated 36,574 service members who died in the war, to be installed at the national Korean War memorial.
