Local Walmart funds Mental Health First Aid courses

Arizona Daily Sun - 1/29/2020

Jan. 28--East Flagstaff's Walmart Supercenter has donated $1,000 to continue mental health training in northern Arizona.

The grant, given to Northern Arizona Healthcare Foundation, will fund Mental Health First Aid training through the Stronger as One Coalition. These courses help people identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance abuse.

"The ability to respond properly to a mental health crisis is as important as CPR is to saving lives," said Matt Eckhoff, the foundation's donor relations officer and its point person to the Stronger as One Coalition.

The eight-hour mental health first aid courses are free and open to adults. The coalition, which formed more than a year ago to increase community awareness of mental issues and suicide prevention, aims to train 50,000 people in northern Arizona in five years.
