Regions Hospital to add 20 beds to inpatient mental health center

Saint Paul Pioneer Press - 7/6/2021

Jul. 6—Regions Hospital plans to expand inpatient mental health services, adding 20 beds to its 100-bed St. Paul treatment center by the end of the year.

The addition should serve an additional 600 patients each year while freeing up beds in its emergency center.

"There's always been a demand for inpatient psychiatry beds, as long as I can remember," said Christine Stanson, medical director of inpatient mental health for HealthPartners. Regions is part of the HealthPartners system.

Early last year, the competing Fairview Health considered shuttering the money-losing St. Joseph's Hospital and its 105 beds dedicated to mental health and chemical dependency. Fairview later backed off those plans, preserving those beds for the near future, and established a small outpatient clinic to help patients with mental illness and addiction transition back to the community.
