VIDEO: Memorial Day event returns to Veterans Memorial Park

May 30—ROCKINGHAM — The 21st annual Memorial Day ceremony returned to Richmond County Veterans Memorial Park after last year's scaled down event wasn't open to the public.

"Having it back in full action and having the people of Richmond County here, it's an honor," said Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 4203 Commander Eddie Dean.

A 21-gun salute, flag folding, and a presentation of ceremonial wreaths were part of the event, as well as a luncheon. American Legion Post 147 and Americans Veterans (AMVETS) joined the VFW to host the event.

"Without all of each others help, it wouldn't be a success," Dean said.

Dean gave a reading of the deceased Veterans of 2020 and 2021 from the VFW and AMVETS. A moment of silence was held for them.

Rockingham City Council member Denise Sullivan and Richmond CountyBoard of Commissioner Andy Grooms both gave remarks at the beginning of the event recognizing the occasion.

Chaplain Tierian "Randy" Cash delivered a speech at the ceremony. He was commissioned as a Navy Chaplain in 1980 and has served a variety of assignments with the Navy and Marine Corps.

"We are very fortunate to be Americans and have the history and tradition that we do," Cash said.

His speech honored the various men and women who have died in the line of duty throughout American history. Specifically, he cited the legacy of Cindy Beaudoin, 19, an Army Specialist in the National Guard 142 Medical Company. She was killed in action when her convoy struck a landmine during the ceasefire of the Gulf War on February 28, 1991.

Cash said the the world is still a dangerous place and that "wars are often unpopular, as they should be." He reminded the audience that the decision to go to war is never the action of the individuals who serve, but of policy makers.

"That's why were here today," Cash concluded. "Words are poor tools with which we try to express what is in our hearts as we continue the great tradition that was started in the Revolutionary War. We're here to remember."
